Hawaiian Healing Skin Care Meet Our Ingredients Meadowfoam Seed Oil

What is Meadowfoam Seed Oil?

Meadowfoam seed oil comes from the seeds of the Limnanthes alba plant, an herbaceous wildflower native to the waterways of the Pacific northwest. Unlike most oils, this one is particularly unique because of how it was discovered. While centuries of using natural ingredients had prepared us with information about efficacy with hundreds of all-natural ingredients, this one is still fairly new. Meadowfoam seed oil's appeal to the mainstream is a lot more clinical, however.  Apparently, in the 1950’s, the crop was suggested to be tested by the US Department of Agriculture, when the department sought a “renewable raw material source for industrial applications”. After a LOT of extensive research and development into Meadowfoam's potential throughout the 1960’s and 70’s, the more commercialized development of Meadowfoam for oil production didn’t begin until the beginning of the 1980’s.

Why is This Oil So Beneficial For Our Skin?

  • It is a cold-pressed, all-natural oil extracted from the seeds of the Meadowfoam flower; meaning: this ingredient is of premium quality because of the yield/quantity and extraction process.
    Superior, topnotch ingredient? ✔️
  • Meadowfoam has a unique, velvety texture that does not leave behind any greasy residue. This gives it more versatility in topical applications, as it is suitable for all skin types due to it being such an intense emollient* (while still being light instead of the heavier oils we’re more accustomed to).
Versatile product for multiple skin types? ✔️
  • It is believed to be one of the top carrier oils** that are found in cosmeceuticals/beauty products today.
    Long-lasting rejuvenator and primer? ✔️
  • Meadowfoam seed oil is known to work in a similar way to the sebum (our skin’s oils) we produce naturally, which makes it particularly effective at sealing in moisture. It helps to balance the skin's natural oil production, contributing to a more even complexion.
Clean ingredients that provide smooth, hydrated, clear skin that’s already close to your natural composition? ✔️
  • Other skin benefits include helping to reduce the appearance of stretch marks, scars, fine lines, and wrinkles to promote an energized and rejuvenated appearance.
Tackles the concerns we have about our skin as we continue to age?
    ✔️
  • It has a low comedogenicity*** (a measurement of how likely it is to clog pores) and, thanks to the eicosenoic acid, can help balance sebum (oil) production.
Great for oily and acne-prone skin? ✔️
  • It is considered safe to use daily and in conjunction with other skincare oils, creams, and serums.
    Safe? Effective? Worth it? ✔️✔️✔️

*Emollient substances maintain hydration by locking moisture into the skin and hair. This helps to maintain a soft and supple look and feel.
**Carrier oils are readily absorbed by the skin and, just one of the many reasons why it’s such a great ingredient, it does not evaporate quickly. This gives your product strong staying power, which makes them a great base material for other products and makeup products.
***Comedogenicity: Meadowfoam seed oil has a very low comedogenic rating and is not likely to clog pores. Being a plant seed oil, it closely resembles natural skin oils and is easily absorbed into the skin without causing buildup.

Ready to Dive a Little Deeper?

The chemical makeup of long-chain fatty acids (which give it exceptional stability) is what sets Meadowfoam seed oil apart from all the others. Today, it is in high demand because it is one of the most stable plant oils for both industrial and cosmetic uses. Because of the extremely high concentration of unique long-chain fatty acids, it makes this oil beneficial for the skin and hair, and is highly resistant to oxidation and heat stress. Antioxidants and fatty acids make it a perfect ingredient to apply to the skin and hair, bequeathing it with rich, moisturizing properties and luxurious, silky texture.

This oil also contains the glucosinolate derivatives, 3-methoxybenzyl isothiocyanate (MBITC) and 3-methoxyphenyl acetonitrile. ((These derivatives have been in controlled studies to inhibit the enzymes that degrade collagen in the skin and to help offset the impact of UVB light exposure.)) Because of this, Meadowfoam oil is an extremely popular, albeit (fairly)new, ingredient in rejuvenating skin-and-hair products.

Meadowfoam also seems to have the highest concentration (about 98%) of the long-chain fatty acids, Docosenoic acid and Docosadienoic acid. These acids are the most resistant to rancidity when exposed to oxygen or heat. This affords the oil a long shelf life without compromising its effectiveness.

Alicia Zalka, M.D., a dermatologist in Danbury, Connecticut, notes how Meadowfoam seed oil acts as a barrier on top of the skin, sealing in moisture and leaving it feeling smoother and softer. This plant-derived ingredient endows the skin with a beautiful, radiant glow (that’s not from an oily complexion)! Says Dr. Zalka, meadowfoam seed, in particular, is known to be less greasy than its counterparts.

NOT ALL OILS ARE CREATED THE SAME! :)

High in vitamin E, a powerful antioxidant that can help ward off free-radical damage, and omega-9 fatty acid or eicosenoic acid, this oil is packed full of skin-nourishment. Preventing as much free-radical damage as you can is most beneficial, because both free radical and UV-induced damage can cause hyperpigmentation, wrinkles, fine lines, among other dermatological issues. ((Don’t forget your sunscreen!))

To Sum It Up:

  • Meadowfoam seed oil is rich in vitamin C, E, and linoleic acid, and is known for its wide range of skin benefits.
  • As a moisturizer, it helps seal skin moisture and works well on acne-prone skin.
  • The unique chemical structure of meadowfoam seed oil helps moisturize the skin and hair.
  • Because of the long-chain fatty acids, it is most resistant to rancidity when exposed to oxygen or heat, ensuring a long shelf life (of about three years) without any loss of efficacy.
  • It works REALLY well with all of the other ingredients in each of our products, causing them to be more effective than they would be without it.
